The UK Ministry of Defence through their Defence, Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and a prime defence contractor issued a challenge to produce a high velocity decoy drone for marine applications to protect ships against missile attack.
ISS Aerospace produced a decoy drone capable of emitting ‘electronic chaff’ to lure a hostile missile away from the target ship and towards itself. The Dodecahexa drone reached a 200m distance and an altitude of 50m at a rapid pace. It achieved a top speed of 110 mph and had a linear range of 10 miles. It met the needs of the project sponsors and work is continuing.
